Fruit bowl baby carriage
Cute and festive way to display your fruit bowl for a baby shower.
First, lay the watermelon on a flat side so it doesn't roll around. You can take a thin slice off the bottom so it lay flat, but make sure not to cut too deep that will cut into the flesh. Make a quarter cut out of the watermelon to create the 'carriage' both width and lengthwise. Be sure to also save the rind as you will need this for the handle from the cut out portion. Slice a portion of the rind to 1/2 to 1 inch for the handle and shorten the length to make the handle proportional (mine was a bit high).
Next, scoop out the flesh to reserve and cut into bite sized pieces to refill the carriage once complete. Make zigzag cuts about 1/2 to 1 inch deep to create the umbrella portion of the carriage. Keep in mind the size of your watermelon. The larger the watermelon, the deeper the zigzag you can make versus a shorter smaller watermelon. Then, slice a lemon into 4 rounds about 1/4 inch thick for the wheels.
Lastly, assemble it all together. Using toothpicks, attach 2 lemon slices to each side of the watermelon for the wheels. The handle is also attached by toothpicks on each side.
Choose your fruit. You can definitely tailor your fruit to what you like. My faves are watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, strawberries, blueberries, and grapes. Mix gently together right before eating to prevent bruising to the fruit.
Tip: you can always cut away more at the watermelon if you need to resize it to make it look proportional, but you can never add it back 😜
